SUMMARY:Magick Lantern’s Film June 10 – Arrangirasi…pizza and the art of living (2017)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday June 10\nArrangiarsi…pizza and the art of living (2017)\nEnglish/Italian subtitles\nDocumentary \nLooking for the meaning of life\, Naples-style.\nREVIEW by\nstjo-9366420 June 2017\nTroncone\, a San Francisco native\, is of Neapolitan extraction\, and after an epiphany into his deep emotional connection with the land of his forebears\, he embarks on a personal and at times quixotic pilgrimage to explore what it means to live life like a true Neapolitan\, embracing the Naples spirit of making the most of the situations life hands you (the arrangiarsi of the title)\, documenting his sometimes arduous personal journey along the way. \nThe result is a fascinating blend of three constantly intertwining themes: an alternative and partisan history of southern Italy\, which served as a welcome counterpoint to the conventional narrative; an unabashed celebration of the divine creation that is true pizza Napolitano and the labor involved in its deceptively simple ingredients (if you’ve never seen a self-massaging buffalo\, well you’re in luck); and above all Troncone’s own pilgrim’s progress in his quest for spiritual balance through acceptance of his ancestral and internal north-south divide. The conclusion is deeply satisfying and packs a surprising emotional wallop. \nTickets $15 on-line or Cash at the door. \nVolunteers see the film for free! Memberships available for cost savings! www.magicklantern.org Every 2nd Saturday.\nCall for information 510-232-2559 #3

SUMMARY:Richmond’s Own Grammy Nominated Andre Thierry at Baltic Kiss
DESCRIPTION:Richmond’s Own\, Grammy Nominated\, Andre Thierry plays the Baltic Kiss! Come play wit’ us!\n\n\nAlthough born and raised in Richmond\, California\, Andre’s French-Kreole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana. He embarked on a path with specific knowledge and extraordinary talents at a very young age. True to his culture and love of music\, he has crafted a career well beyond his years as an artist. \nAndre grew up experiencing the French Kreole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish\, St. Mark’s Catholic Church. The best Zydeco musicians Louisiana had to offer traveled to California to play at these dances. The exposure allowed him to develop his love for traditional French Kreole music. Andre regularly played with visiting bands\, such as the late John Delafose and many local Zydeco and Cajun bands\, including the late Danny Poullard (California Cajun Orchestra). By age twelve\, Andre formed his band\, “Zydeco Magic.” Andre is self-taught and constantly increases his repertoire. \nIn his 30’s\, he had already been deemed a legend. There is widespread agreement that he is an exceptional\, multi-dimensional musician with a finely honed ability to merge his accordions with musical mastery.

SUMMARY:Richmond Promise Scholar Celebration 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join the Richmond Promise community in welcoming our brilliant\, new cohort of Scholars and celebrating our incredible college alumni!\n\n\nThe Richmond Promise invites the public to attend the organization’s 8th Annual Scholar Celebration\, set to take place on Saturday\, June 3rd\, 2023\, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Richmond Civic Center Plaza. Registration for the event is free. \nSince launching in 2016\, the Richmond Promise – a postsecondary access and success organization – has supported over 3\,000 Richmond young people on their journeys to and through higher education. The Richmond Promise currently serves more than 1\,900 scholars who are pursuing associate and bachelor degrees\, and career technical education certifications at 220 colleges and universities across the United States. A vast majority of Richmond Promise scholars identify as people of color\, first-generation college students\, and students from low-income backgrounds. \nDating back to the inaugural year of the organization\, the Scholar Celebration has served as the Richmond Promise’s largest event and a tradition that welcomes the newest cohort of Richmond youth to a community of local degree and certificate seekers who are supported through a multi-year scholarship and wraparound services. This year’s Scholar Celebration will honor over 400 new Richmond Promise scholarship recipients who will begin their higher education journeys this fall semester. \nRichmond Promise will energize our new scholars by transforming Richmond Civic Center Plaza into a thriving college quad. The outdoor event will feature booths hosted by local colleges and universities\, including U.C. Berkeley\, Contra Costa College\, Berkeley City College\, Diablo Valley College\, San Francisco State University\, and more. The Richmond Promise’s quad experience will also include games and activities\, performances\, Curbside Kitchen food truck\, community resources\, and a traditional ceremony recognizing members of the organization’s 8th scholar cohort.

Please reach out to scott@clientclicks if you have prizes you’d like to donate. \nWe also want to thank Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez for his presentation at our March luncheon and Baltic Kiss for catering the event with a delicious barbeque lunch. \nThe business association is looking forward to returning to a monthly luncheon format at the upstairs board room at the new Hotel Mac restaurant\, now called Biancoverde. We’ve heard from owners\, Blanca Zepedalomeli and Juvenal Magaña\, that renovations are progressing and we can’t wait to see the updates. \nThe Point Richmond Business Association board is also working on planning a Fall Fest street fair extravaganza for late October. We look forward to bringing back many of the features we had last time which included bands\, a pumpkin patch\, vendor booths\, restaurant booths\, a video game truck\, dance presentations and more. The Fall Fest is a fundraiser that generates funds for local non-profits including the Washington School PTA. \nLots of new ideas have been floated such as recognizing the Point’s historical district with period costumes and a parade of period cars. \nIf you would like to join the Fall Fest planning committee\, please reach out to Wyvonne Brown at bbnhair@gmail.com. \nRegards\,\nScott Harris\nPRBA Board Vice President \nPRBA Board Members:\nDaniel Butt – President\, Law Office of Daniel Butt\nScott Harris – VP/Marketing\, ClientClicks\nSummer Smith – Treasurer\nKaren Buchanan – Secretary\nWyvonne Brown – at large\, Beauty by Nature Salon\nJosephine Orozco – at large\, El Sol\nDaniel Webster – at large\, Cuts First Class

SUMMARY:Magick Lantern’s Film May 13 – Roise & Frank (2022)
DESCRIPTION:DRAMA\n1hr 30min\nGaelic/English Subtitles\nIMDB Rating 8/10 \nREVIEW by by Graham at Scannnain.com IRISH REVIEWS \nRóise & Frank is an Irish film about grief and loss and how people can find the most unusual ways to cope. \nWhen the film opens we see that Róise (Ní Neachtain) is still reeling from the loss of her beloved husband two years previous. She has a routine. She’ll eat some food\, drink some tea and when the time calls for it she goes to the local shop to restock. Then one day something changes. A random dog finds his way onto\nher path and seems to be quite the nuisance. \nHe follows her everywhere she goes and she doesn’t like the attention. That is until he begins to exhibit unusual moments of humanity. This stray knows things about Róise that only her husband would know and at the point she is in her life\, it feels like she needs this regardless of it being real or a part of some delusion. \nRóise & Frank is a sweet film. I found it quite moving and the performances for the most part were suitably believable. There are moments where the performances can come across as cartoonish but they were few and far between. Also the chemistry Frank has with not just Róise but the whole community he returns to is compelling. By the end of the film\, I was rooting for him and his return to the hurling community. \nIt’s not Air Bud but there’s still a surprisingly heartfelt sports film tucked within this film about grief and coping with it. It’s also fantastic to see hurling get such a loving dedication on screen. Knowing that several countries have seen this film and now know that hurling exists makes me quite proud. \nDirectors Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy also showcase the beauty of Waterford in this film. Like other Irish directors\, they know how to celebrate the beauty of the island without going too over the top with it. It’s definitely a less is more decision and it works for the down-to-earth characters and the world they live in. Even if there is a supposed spirit inhabiting a dog the film still feels surprisingly relatable. \nOne scene involving Frank and Róise’s son Alan (Cillian O’Gairbhi) will ring far too true for many children and their fathers. It’s sweet\, it’s silly as well as bizarre and I loved it. What ultimately worked for me with Róise & Frank is the ending. \nThe ending to me the only way the film could have ended and I absolutely loved it.
